Special Interest Days 2018

These special interest days take place at the Riverhouse Barn Arts Centre in Walton and normally take the form of two lectures in the morning followed by lunch. A further lecture or discussion follows in the afternoon.

The fusion of art, design and pleasure on the Cote d’Azure in the 1920/30’s. In the early 1920’s an intoxicating mix of artists, writers, musicians and international visitors, inspired by a mythological seascape of luminous colours, created a new summer season.

In 2018 the Royal Academy celebrates 250 years since its foundation. This lecture looks at some of the artists involved at the very beginning, including the President, Sir Joshua Reynolds and brings us right up to date to a Royal Academy that numbers contemporary artists such as Tracey Emin. Please note that this SID will be two lectures during the morning, finishing before lunch. 

Thursday, 13 December 2018 – Festive Supper: Santa Claus – The Art that turns him from St Nicholas into Father Christmas – the jovial giver of presents

St Nicholas is said to have saved the lives of three virgins by offering presents. As the patron saint of sailors his fame spreads to Italy, but it is the Dutch who transform him into Sinterklaas and finally Santa Claus. This gift-giving saint then emerges in Britain as Father Christmas.
